Abstract

|
Mediastinal mature teratoma (MMT) is an uncommon neoplasm in children. Although it may cause the respiratory symptoms in less than 2 years old children, it is usually asymptomatic in older children. MMT may rupture into the pleural cavity and cause respiratory difficulty and chest pain. Recently, we experienced a case of MMT which ruptured into the pleural cavity and caused massive pleural effusion and lung collapse. Although MMT with rupture into the pleural cavity is a rare complication as there have been only a few pediatric patients described, this case suggested that the MMT with rupture be included in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion.
